The Mathematics of Music

I have to admit, I really felt I learned a lot in this math class. I really never knew so much mathematics went into determining preciously which note to strike. The connection between mathematics and music with things such as how many notes to go up for the next beat or in keeping rythme is something I have been aware of since I first started learning music but I never knew there was such a complex underbelly of musical debate.

Will this change the way I listen to music, in general? Of course not! Typically when I listen to music its to help me concentrate and go deep into thought about something else or to simply enjoy the lyrics and beat of a good sound. All throughout the concert last night I was using the piano player's beautiful songs to picture things far away, ancient and then to zone out and focus on some other things I've been thinking about, I would never want any of this interrupted by mathematics for the most part. This would defeat the purpose of listening to music for me. However, the next time I see or discuss written music with someone, yes, I think this knowledge will change my take on it very much.

  1. Sarah! I totally agree with you about the whole letting math ruin music. I use music as a means of escape in a sense. I use it to concentrate more or to block out the background so that I can think. I think that knowing these things will help me to appreciate the amount of thought that goes behind making music, but I dont think it will change the way I listen to it.

  2. I am so glad that you have the same exact idea of music as I do. I love learning math and I love listening to music but definetly not together. I wish that I could appreciate music in a different light but I would not want it ruined by the idea of numbers going through my mind. Because like you I like to listen to music and let my mind wonder to different things, places, or ideas.

  3. How sad is it that we feel math would ruin our music? haha I totally agree though. I use music to concentrate when I'm studying, or to distract me from something else going on. The last thing I want to think about when I'm jammin to The Used because I'm mad or chillin to the Beatles is math.

  4. I was also equally impressed with just how much work and thought go into creating a piece of music. I agree that it wont change the way I play music but it is impressive none the less.
